The Adam Astro range of scales are bargain priced compact scales that come in 3 capacities. A high resolution 2000g x 0.1g for precision weighing, 4000g x 0.5g and 8000g x 1g. The version we tested was the ASC-2000 (2000g x 0.1g).
The scales are made from stainless steel and are lightweight. Once unpacked you can see that the housing is much better quality stainless steel than some of the scales on the market and there are no sharp edges (like some!). These scales have been designed for easy cleaning. A mains adapter is supplied with the scales but they can also be used on battery power with 2 x AAA batteries (not supplied).
After pressing the On/Off button the scales go through their setup routine. You immediately notice the bright LCD display and large green digits. (If you overload the scales the digits turn red to indicate there is a problem). We tested the scales on a sunlit desk and the display was still easily visible. The Astro features a simple two button operation. The first button is On/Off and the second button in normal weighing mode is used for Mode and Tare. By pressing Mode/Tare briefly you can toggle between different weighing modes (grams, pounds or ounces). To tare or set zero place an item on the pan and hold the Mode/Tare key for 3 seconds. Calibration and power saving settings can also be accessed from the keyboard.
We think the Adam Astro scales are fantastic value for the build quality. They are ideal as food processing, portioning scales or for use in a bakery. They are rugged enough to withstand a kitchen environment and can be quickly wiped clean after use. In saying that we would not recommend using these scales where a lot of water is present as they have no waterproof rating.
Their compactness and light weight means they can be easily moved from one place to another or stored away after use, making them perfect for use in a classroom.
